Field Trip Journal

Travel Report

September 20-24, 2011

Manila, Philippines

Fieldtrip Overview

The educational tour helps the student/s and faculty to enhance their knowledge and to expose them about new things that can’t be found in the four corners of the classroom. It also enables us to discover high level of technology in terms of gadgets and networking. By this entire means, it can give us guidance on what we want in the future.

Day 1

Today, I went on a company visit to PLDT in Mandaluyong City in the morning and SPI Servisoft in Paranaque City in the afternoon.

What I learned?

First and for most I already knew what PLDT means and it’s Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company it sounds funny but it was true. Beside that during our visitation we had been orient by Madam Anita Ferrer. She told us about their INNOLAB (Innovation Laboratory and telecommunication Education Center of PLDT) and what are those three principal business group of PLDT: first is the “fixed lined that is used for residential or in a small businesses”, second is the wireless that is used for wider areas and the third is the information technology or just sometimes called data. The PLDT company was owned by Mr.

Manuel Velez Pangilinan.

The PLDT has also three activities and it comprises the memorabilia, information technology lecture and business solution. In the memorabilia, they showed us the progression of PLDT from the age of birth (1928-1938) up to the present, the rapid changing of the said technology. During our tour in this company I learned that from the beginning it only have a minimum numbers of employees until the years past these minimum numbers becomes bigger and bigger as the company steps forward not only in their

telephone line services but in their product itself. To sum up, the memorabilia is the evolution of the growth of PLDT company.

The second activity that we had was the information technology lecture and it was led by Engr. Edmund Mamboyo. The topic was about the PLDT business and services. I learned that the yesterday’s background of PLDT was just telecommunications or the basic thing, the telephone line and the PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network), the today’s condition has already a mixtures of different products, in other words it has an improvement happens. These are the following mixtures like dataCom, PLDT Fixed Business, internet and VoIP (Voice over IP). While the tomorrow or also known as the dawning today it has greater goal and that is to have the next generation network (NGN). The NGN has the capabilities

of 25 megabits per second as of the bandwidth, VoIP in a one line and the “witricity” or the wireless electricity. But the big question is who will be the one to make it? To pursue this plan? The answer is US.

Tele means distant and communications means to exchange of information. The drums fabricated from the trunks, carrier pigeon, smoke signals and semaphore flags that were used by the girl scouts and boy scouts are examples of the early forms of telecommunications. It has also three important elements that the telecommunication links should have the sender, the transmission medium and receiver. Furthermore, there are types of sender, the voice equipment and data equipment.

The last activity was business solution; we went to their upper floor so that we could see the newest technology or equipment. In this floor, they have hope solution for the residential purposes like in appliances, franchising solution that is intended for small or big businesses and lastly are the board room that has a big screen; it is so big and s

uper amazing. This big screen is divided into 32 small different screen you can view different agenda at one time.

As for the afternoon, I stated on the previous page that we went to SPI Global with Ms. Jade and Ms. Gem and et. al., they were the recruitment team. They discussed us about the business process outsourcing and outsourcing in particular. Outsourcing is defines as the contracting with an outside vendor to provide any service. The “SPI” in SPI Global has no real meaning but because some people who are so curious about this they m

ade some definition of SPI and that is Soluitions.People.Innovation. The last things I learned that the six sigma is a training that will help you to eliminate your negative skills.

What I liked?

I really liked when the SPI Global gave us souvenir even it was small but at least we had this thing as a remembrance. I also reminiscent of go round in th

eir different offices and buildings although it does not have any connection to our course. LOL.

What I didn’t like?

I didn’t like reporting session because it so boring and I felt so sleepy. If I have the chance I’d better stay in PLDT longer but the sad part there was I can’t have any remembrance.

Day 2

Today, I went on a company visit to

UP Diliman for Philippine Youth Congress Information Technology (Y4IT)

What I learned?

There four venue for Y4IT in UP and in depends to us on where we are going to attend the seminar because each site has different program or topic that will be discuss. In connection to this, everyone agreed that we are going to the university theater. There were so many participants in different regions, different language and different attitude. As we go inside I was amazed of what I saw, a big stage, and a logo of Y4IT that was loc

ated above the stage that looks like a comets as you took picture and the three little puppets of Y4IT namely Yno (green), Yli (orange) and Yia (yellow).

So much for that, the things that I learned during this day was

not that good because I did not listen in some of the speakers. The only person to whom I lend my ears was to Hon. Vicente Sotto III our keynote speaker. I love the way he talks because I can relate and easy to understand. He said, “the next generation will be the key to succeed the country”.

For the afternoon session, I didn’t went to university theater again instead I go to bahay ng alumni to explore different places of UP. In the bahay ng alumni, there were so many booths, in every booths there is “pakulo” in order to attract participants some gave different souvenirs and brochures.

In this time, I just proven it into myself that being so shy meeting someone was no used, it won’t help you develops your communicating skills and e attentive and be observant always.

What I liked?

I liked the facilities and equipments they have and not also the technical aspects but they do have a natural beauty like the UP oblation and their structure of buildings. Moreover, they have plenty of tress just like the USeP, Tagum Campus that’s why they have fresh air despite of a very hot temperature. I loved the snacks and so many souvenirs but you can have it if you have a lot of money.

What I didn’t like?

I don’t have dislikes during our tour in UP Diliman. =)

Day 3

Today, I went on a company visit to

Fluor Daniel Incorporation Philippines in Alabang in the morning and DOST (Science Technology Information Institute) in Bicutan.

What I learned?

In the reason that some of my classmates were still in the ground floor because they forgot to bring their identification card and they need to get back to the bus to get it so that they could enter Fluor Daniel, we, the first batch came to their meeting area or office first. We could not start yet because all things were not yet set so we kind a “chika2” or knowing each other more. After this, Ms. Joan, the Human Resource Team taught us about how to write a better resume. A resume that stand-out among others. Get more attention to read by the HR. I believe that is has a big help for us students as we apply work in the future.

They also gave us the six things successful teams have in common: purpose, process, communication, involvement, commitment and trust. From the word itself, you can already know what does it really mean. In relation to this, Fluor uses IT so that they can make a model construction by means of autocad or simply mean they had done it electronically.

Their spokesperson states that, “IT is a living organism.” By elaborate it more, they gave us a cycle. From the service request going to capacity, capacity going to configuration of the computer, after this the testing occur and followed by the delivering to the end user. During the deliveration to the end user if it happens that there will be a log problem to repository they just need to call IT support. Before going to the IT support they could go to helpdesk to have the ticketing. Most importantly, the changed management will now take controlled. As we tour to their company, I have seen many nice and approachable people, convenient rooms and facilities and a very cool network. They taught us the processes of their specified areas or field. The future in IT is a cloud of computing and that is everything is a service.

I also learned here that the gadgets particularly the network office should have a proper ventilation and air-conditioned to avoid crashing of machines and equipments. This laboratory materials should not be seen by unauthorized personnel because it is being protected by other or outside persons.

As for the DOST, they just tell what DOST’s goal and their future plans. They also let us viewed their sites and their Science Heritage Building. I learned and seen with my two eyes the late licensed scientists here in the Philippines, the alibata, the first telephone and karaoke and etc.

What I liked?

I really liked the snacks provided by the Fluor Daniel and the trip by the scheduled company for this day because I want every time I am in a new place I’d rather go around and free to explore. I also liked that they’re having an environmental control like CCTV, fire protection and the PACU (Pre-session Air-conditioned Unit).

What I didn’t like?

I hate because I paid 20php just for their heritage building as an entrance fee but I don’t think if it’s worthy for my money. My expectation is higher than what I saw that time. I knew that it sounds bad but that’s what I felt that moment.

Day 4

Today, I went on a company visit to

Social Security System, East Avenue in Quezon City in the morning and Exist Global, Ortigas Center in the afternoon.

What I learned?

In the SSS, they taught us the processes of their business and in their IT related topics. In addition, they told us those possible benefits in having social security plan in case of any neither accidents nor hindrances that may happen in our life without any expectation. They let us to be assured that even we are still student especially information technology ones we can still be a SSS member already if and only if we had an income through online or off site. And after our graduation if God’s will, we can still continued our SSS plan by changing its status.

In order for you to survive with your present work you need to have a proper training before you applied it and most probably you know how to communicate or mingle with the other co-workers. Don’t be shy. I always told myself over and over again. Perhaps, I can tell I need more time to fell this way and enhance more. Since, I am starting to discover new things I can put and compiled it so that if I want something I knew where to find the answer.

For the afternoon, we went to Exist Global. At first I thought it’s a huge company where can plenty of employees worked but I was wrong, definitely wrong! It was built in the year 2001 and as far as I saw you can count your fingers comparing their numbers of employees. It’s very small since they’re just starting but there was a big but they have a heavy offer and that is, a software development and technical services. They used open source development as a root and unparallel technology expertise in Java and Ruby on Rails. Honestly I don’t have any backgrounds about ruby on rails but as what they say, they don’t care whether you have a background or not because as you apply into their company they would conduct a free training that would helps a person to improved and discover that man what he really wants. And moreover, they won’t hold that person to stay and worked to their company. He has all the freedom to what he’ll choose. They emphasize the topic about if ever you face a problem you just need to handle it very well. Solve it and ask help if you can make it alone.

The important things when you have already work is you need to love your work and nothing would hinder your road no matter how difficult it is, just believed in yourself that you can and be confident. Share your knowledge and do not stop learning! Know your goal in life and don’t stop dreaming. With the words of encouragement I mentioned above, I can reflect it to myself, I can be a better me now. A confident one! =0

What I liked?

Both company I like their words of encouragement for us beginners. It can be a big help to us believing that we can.

What I dislike?

Same as the day 2 I can’t find anything that I don’t liked because from all the days that I’ve been in Manila this was one of the best day!

Day 5

Since its weekends, it only means that we can’t visit any IT company so what we did was we went to Luneta Park, National Museum and go back to Divisoria.

What I learned?

Although it’s our free day I learned those simple things that I forgot to do so like in our tour in the National Museum and in the night market or also known as Divisoria. First in the LP and NM, before I enter this building I never what it was look like and for me, I don’t care because what matters me most was the gadgets and new high technologies. But then, as I viewed all the things I just realized this high tech gadget is one way to our past. We can’t have our present if it’s not because of our past. We were interconnected to each other. If we were trying to protect and developing of what we have right now we should also protect more the things that were in the past so that new generations in the future could still witness the historic part of their ancestors.

What I’ve learned in going to Divisoria was to ask for “tawad para sa items”. It was fun and I enjoyed also that part. You need to be wise and be aware of your surroundings so that you can’t be a loser in the end.

What I liked?

I enjoyed riding in a bus and looking those wonderful areas and location of Manila City and the other part of Luzon. In the first time, I tried a heavy and real traffic even though some people were not happy of the traffic but me I charged it as once and lifetime experienced. I felt happy going to the malls as if a tourist and buying souvenirs for family and friends. As a results, no more money! LOL

The only thing I kept on my mind that these experiences wouldn’t be replaced by any amount. It is priceless.

What I didn’t like?

I think I didn’t like the whether at that time because it’s raining. We were getting wet. “Sayang ang outfit!”
